Currently: September

Reading a random sampling of novels and training books. I didn't finish all 10 books on my Literary Ladies Summer Challenge list, but I did read 6 of them and start on a 7th, which is like...probably more books than I read in all of 2014. Maybe 2013 and 2014 combined. There are a few that I admittedly read just to get through the challenge, but it open my eyes to some new authors and genres. And there are some books I didn't read, even though I've been meaning to for a while. I'm still interested in them but for whatever reason, now just isn't the right time.  Any good books you've read lately that I should add to my list?

Listening to Serial Dynasty and Lore. I did a lot of driving this month and have even more to do in the next 6 weeks and these have been keeping me company on long trips back and forth across the state. Any other podcasts that I just HAVE to listen to? Crime and/or creepy stories preferred.

Wearing things from my fall pseudo-capsule. I haven't had the time and we haven't had the weather yet to make an official fall capsule a reality, but I'm putting things together and figuring out what works. I'm also figuring out if I even want to continue with seasonal capsules. For a while I seriously considered a year-round, all-seasons capsule, or maybe some hybrid between the two. I haven't made up my mind about what to do about fall yet, but I did at least put away all my shorts on September 1 so that's a step in the right direction. Wearing shorts into fall: yay or nay?

Saying goodbye, or rather good riddance, to the IUD that has given my uterus (and therefore me) hell for the last 5.5 years. I've been saying I need to get it taken out for the last year, I've been trying to make an appointment to do so for the last 3 months, and today is the day! Are my birth control woes TMI? (You don't have to answer that).

Willing my hair to grow. I don't feel like I got what I asked for, at all, the last time I got my hair done, and it has bothered me ever since. My hair just won't grow super long, I know that from years of trying, but it will get to a long-for-me length and I am desperate to get it back there and then never ever cut my hair again. I've never been so diligent about taking vitamins as I have this past month. Got any good tips for long, healthy hair? Or maybe just a bad haircut story?

Planning a completely different fall calendar than I had last year. Last year, fall revolved around a few races I've come to love: Wicked 10k, City of Oaks half marathon, and Richmond half marathon. Wicked is my only race streak (this year will be #5!), it's my favorite race because it's Halloween-themed, and this year it's actually ON Halloween, so I am absolutely running it. I may not run one step in between B2B on October 17th and Halloween, but I will find some way to make it through 6.2 miles on October 31. I'm not big on dressing up for Halloween in general so I've never dressed up for this race, although lots of people do. But, since this year is all about having fun at this race, I even have an awesome costume planned. As for City of Oaks and Richmond, I'll still be attending both to watch some dear friends achieve some big goals, but at this point, I don't plan on running them. So basically I have October 17 circled, highlighted, starred, etc. for Beach2Battleship, and then I have another circle on October 31 for Wicked, but after that, I'm not sure when I'll run again. What's the big item on your fall calendar?

Wondering how different life is going to be a month from now. This week Abby at BackatSquareZero posted a list of activities (some fitness-related, some not) to do with your time while you're recovering from an injury. But when I read it, all I could think was how taking time off to recover also applies to life post-race, and I couldn't wait to have time for some of them (seriously looking forward to getting a coloring book). I'm almost always in training for something, but never like I have been over the last 4 months. My ass has been sufficiently kicked and, while I'm absolutely looking forward to finishing up and crossing that finish line, I'm also ready for the break. How should I spend my free time once Beach2Battleship is over (besides watching old episodes of 16 & Pregnant on Hulu)?

  2. My hair is the longest it's ever been - normally it's too thin to really look good long, but I feel like it's been staying fuller now that I trim it more frequently and don't let my ends get so split and damaged. Also leave-in conditioner has made a big difference.

You know... I thought your capsule wardrobe posts were super inspiring and I had "make capsule wardrobe" on my to do list for a long time, but I finally realized it doesn't make sense for me. After doing a pretty big purge and only keeping my favorites, I find that space isn't really an issue. I have all my clothes accessible all the time, and there's just few enough of them that it's not a problem. PLUS it's easier to make a full rainbow if I have access to all of them. My closet has never been so harmonized! (all of which, since you asked about books, was completely inspired by Marie Kondo's The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, which I loved!)

  3. Book rec: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Kind of dark and twisted at the beginning, but sucked me in. The photos are fun too. Technically a young adult novel, but both my husband and I really liked it.

Birth control woes: not TMI. I've been on a 3 week pill that skips the active pills. I have not had a period since April of 2012 and it has been glorious!

I'm starting to think about post-race activities as well. I just registered for a fun Halloween 5k, and the hubby and I are planning a fun little adult getaway one night in November. Next marathon training starts Jan 1st though, so I've gotta enjoy the holidays to the fullest!

  5. So... I had never heard about Serial Dynasty until yesterday when Undisclosed mentioned it offhand. I need to check it out! Have you listened to Sword and Scale- it is true life crime and can be REALLY good. Start with episode 40? The one about the killer nurse.

  6. yay for reading!! i think i did too many challenges / requested too many books off netgalley that i felt like i 'had' to read certain books and i'm kinda over it and just want to read for the sake of reading right now. but you know i have a zillion and one recommendations at all times that i'm happy to throw at you.
i would not wear shorts into fall. however. it has to be at least 90 degrees for me to wear shorts and I think it hit 90 once here in the summer, so. take my answer with a grain of salt.
ouch to the IUD!! ow. but yay for getting rid of it!
i have no tips on growing hair, but i've heard biotin is amazing. i don't take it though, so i wouldn't know. i also just got some extensions sent to me so i am super excited to play with them because my hair sucks when it gets long.
yay for your costume at the race!! i love dressing up for halloween, but i totally blame that on not dressing up at all until i was like 24 (or however old i was when i moved here). did you dress up a lot as a kid?
i think you should spend your free time on the couch. not doing a damn thing. hahahaha but that is how i would!
ps. love the way you did this post with the questions at the end of each paragraph. you're such a smart cookie.

  7. Bioton and/or prenatals help with hair! I've been taking them for about 5 months now and I feel like my hair is thicker and growing quicker than it did previously! Can't wait to see what your costume is for the race :)

podcasts- not scary but Strangers is always great and I love Death, Sex and Money.
sorry about your IUD! i praise mine to everyone that i ever talk to about birth control.. which oddly feels like a lot when i think about it? let me know if you want to talk more about them- i am curious of details of why yours isn't awesome but it feels rather nosey to ask.......ANYWAY. happy friday!

  10. Is it weird that I'm already excited for your ironman race recap? ;) it's so soon!

  11. I say yes to shorts in fall! I love them with tights underneath too. Also- I don't think your birth control woes are TMI at all. I have my own actually and am warming up to the idea of sharing about them. We're all in this together! ...right? ha! Can't wait for your B2B recap! I don't think I could ever run like you but Wilmington is my hometown, and I like you so I'm stoked! xx

  12. The last time I had a major haircut was in freshman year of college- I cut it to my shoulders and it was so horrific that I've never had more than a trim since then, haha. Bad haircuts are never any fun, but I have to say I LOVE your hair, it always looks so healthy & like you've had it done at a salon or something. I put all of my shorts away too, except for a jean pair just in case, but I doubt I'll wear them... it seems to have turned cool sooo fast here. Excited for your race costume and your next capsule post going into fall/winter!

  13. Boooo on the trouble with the IUD. My pills were giving me all kinds of problems last year and I had to quit them. I would say prenatal vitamins for the hair. I am actually getting ready to do the same because mine has been looking super thing again lately. I really love your capsule posts, but since I have yet been able to do one myself....I totally get why you are thinking about not or doing a hybrid. Can't wait to see what you do either way! If you like Serial, listen to Undisclosed.

  14. So. I have chit-chatter about all the other items, and you know I love you and care about everything going on in your life in every regard, but the second to last one really stopped me. I hope I'm wrong to be reading the tail end of it in a sort of melancholy tone. As excited as I am for you to have the break you are so very much earning right now, I don't want to think about how much of a mental and emotional challenge it has been for you lately, and likely will be through the next few weeks.
I do selfishly hope you change your mind about a short City of Oaks race, but I know that that's a LOT of pressure to put on legs that are still going to be in recovery and I don't want to try to sway you. And as for Richmond, I would love to watch you dominate yet another race this fall, but I guess I'll be just fine if I actually get to have you on the spectating team with me :)
On a lighter note, I just got my hair cut and was told it's super healthy right now, which was great to hear. Not positive this is the why, but I haven't dyed it in like 2-3 years, heat style it once every never (in reality, only to blow dry on winter hair washing days and the odd curling wand/straightener styling every couple of weeks), condition well, and never brush it wet.
Podcasts, hmm. You might enjoy some episodes of Fresh Air (I skip maybe 30-40% of them, but the good ones are really good) and the new Hidden Brain, both from NPR. Also, I've talked about it before but I seriously love We Have Concerns.
As far as what to do when B2B training is over, let me know what you come up with so I can adapt it for myself post-marathon! (Or actually, maybe you can just do what I'm doing and jump right to YTT? ;))
